这是一部精美奇妙的旅行片、新闻片和家庭电影合集，带你重回20世纪上半叶的中国。影片中的所有资料均来自英国电影协会国家档案馆，由一大批英法电影制片人，或专业或业余的旅行家，殖民时代的外籍人士以及基督教传教士们共同摄制而成。影片再现了1900年上海繁华时尚的南京路、1929年的大世界游乐场、1937年的上海马赛、1910年的北京前门大街、1925年杭州的运河美景等极具中国特色和时代印记的场景。在这里你可以漫游香港、重庆、广州、昆明等中国各大城市，探秘湖南和云南的偏远乡村。影片中那些具象但一闪而过的画面可能是现存的在中国取景的影片中最为古老的画面了。 2015年上海国际电影节，英国著名默片钢琴家约翰•斯威尼还为该片进行现场伴奏。
