《维兰德》改编自瑞典小说家亨宁·曼凯尔的系列小说。小说主角维兰德探长是个陷入中年危机的男人，与妻子分居，与父亲关系紧张，唯一的女儿也对他时有不满。同事们对他又敬又怕，敬他总能突发异想，洞察谜案玄机，怕他时不时就发通脾气。他总是饮酒、吃垃圾食品，结果患上了糖尿病。与其他公事公办的警察不同的是，维兰德对案子总是很投入感情。 BBC版的《维兰德》是这部瑞典小说首次改编成英语电视剧。但是故事仍然是设定在瑞典的于斯塔德。而且剧组也是奔赴瑞典拍摄完成的。主角是肯尼思·布拉纳（《我与梦露的一周》中饰演奥利弗爵士，《哈利·波特与密室》中饰演黑魔法防御课老师吉德罗·洛哈特教授，还是《雷神》的导演）。他把维兰德人到中年的困窘、对受害者感同身受的同情、和内心的挣扎表演得细致入微、丝丝入扣。配角们的表演也都十分精彩。其中，汤姆·希德勒斯顿（《雷神》中饰演洛基）在剧中饰演了维兰德手下的心腹警探。第一季第一集中，尼古拉斯·霍尔特（《皮囊》《X战警 第一课》）还扮演了一个饱受父亲家暴折磨的男孩。 与快节奏、注重推理的《新福尔摩斯》不同，《维兰德》更加深沉，有种洗尽铅华的沧桑感，注重的是人文的关怀。办案的过程也更加贴近现实。每起案子，最引人深思、令人唏嘘的不是案子本身，而是案子背后的隐藏的种种玄机。就像《龙纹身的女孩》用少女失踪案折射了瑞典社会女性受侵害的问题，《维兰德》也是醉翁之意不在酒，而在反应瑞典社会各个层面上的问题，以及对人性、对人生的思考。

Sir Watkyn purchases the creamer by telling the shopkeeper, falsely, that Thomas had sent him. The story concerns the Waterbury family who move to &quotThree Chimneys&quot, a house near the railway after the father, who works at the Foreign office, is imprisoned as a result of being falsely accused of selling state secrets to the Russians. The three children, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis, find amusement in watching the trains on the nearby railway line and waving to the passengers. They become friendly with Albert Perks, the station porter, and with the Old Gentleman who regularly takes the 9:15 down train. He is eventually able to help prove their father&#39s innocence, and the family is reunited.The family also take care of the Russian exile, Mr Szczepansky,who came to England looking for his family (later located) and Jim, the grandson of the Old Gentleman,who suffers a broken leg in a tunnel.
