在世界级画家田村修三（石坂 饰）的展览会上发生了一件大事。发现其中一幅展示作品是赝品。画这幅画的到底是谁？连日来，报道不断升温，北海道小樽发现一具女尸。在这两起事件之间出现的男人。他就是曾经被称为新锐天才画家，却因为某个事件而从人们面前消失的津山龙次（本木 饰）。 曾经的龙次的恋人，现在田村的妻子·安奈（小泉 饰）前往小樽。原以为再也不会见面的龙次与安奈重逢，长年侍奉龙次的神秘人费克塞·水肯（中井 饰），追查伪作事件的美术鉴定权威·清家（仲村 饰）、全身刺青的女人·牡丹（清水 饰）、仰慕龙次的调酒师·蓟（菅野 饰）…每个剧情都与不断追求“真正的美”的龙次的想法交织在一起。当他的画笔动起来的时候，紧张的剧情、深邃的爱情、痛切的人性就会呈现在画布和银幕上。
